Tank Blaster Remake

Tanks, wind, crooked trajectories, questionable shopping decisions, and just enough chaos to make a perfect shot feel like science.

Note for Windows

Windows Defender or SmartScreen may ask for confirmation for new downloads that are not widely known yet. If you downloaded Tank Blaster directly from this website, that prompt is expected and the file comes from the official release. Please do not run EXE files from third-party sources.

Voluntary, no paywall, no in-game advantages. Just a small thank-you for more rounds, ports, and polish.

Installation help

When the system asks

Windows

For new Windows downloads, Microsoft Defender SmartScreen may show a blue window saying “Windows protected your PC.” This is common for files that are not widely downloaded yet.

  1. First check that the file came directly from tankblaster.de.
  2. In the blue window, click “More info.”
  3. Then click “Run anyway” to start Tank Blaster.

If Windows only offers “Don’t run,” a device or company policy may block the override. In that case, do not turn SmartScreen off; run the file only on a device where you are allowed to start your own downloads.

Android

Android installs APK files from outside Google Play only after you allow the app that opens the APK to install them. The exact wording can vary slightly between Android versions.

  1. Download the Android APK directly from tankblaster.de.
  2. Open the APK in your browser or file manager. If Android blocks it, open the settings prompt it offers.
  3. Allow that specific app to install unknown apps, for example Chrome, Firefox, or Files.
  4. Go back to the APK and tap “Install.” If Android shows an extra warning, continue only if you trust the source.
  5. On newer devices, you may also need to enable “Allow apps from unverified developers” in Developer options; Android may require a 24-hour security delay for that.

After installation, it is best to turn the permission off again so not every downloaded APK can be installed through that app.

What is this?

Artillery game, but a little different

Tank Blaster is a turn-based artillery game: tanks sit in absurdly unfriendly terrain, the wind interferes without being asked, and in the end the winner is usually the person claiming the last hit was planned exactly that way.

Between rounds, you go shopping. Small weapons, large weapons, serious-looking weapons, weapons with the charm of a faulty chemistry kit. Then you aim, fire, tremble, and cheer while the landscape comments on your calculations.

The remake

As close to the original as makes sense, but stable

Why rebuild it?

Markus Döhla played Tank Blaster around 34 years ago. Years later, Tank Blaster 2 hit the table again—this time with his own children. The game still worked wonderfully as a source of family chaos, though unfortunately, the aging title no longer ran smoothly on modern versions of Windows.

Go instead of crash frustration

Because Tank Blaster 2 kept crashing on Windows 10/11, the remake was born out of a mix of frustration and a love for the game—reprogrammed in Go with the goal of ensuring stable gameplay while preserving the character of the original.

Respect for the source

Tank Blaster stays Tank Blaster: with respect for Axel Lauer's original, its humor, and that wonderfully rough artillery energy. Free, open, and close to the old feeling.

Thank you, Axel

Without the original author's kind permission, this remake would not exist like this

Special thanks go to Axel Lauer, the original author of Tank Blaster. He allowed me to make the Tank Blaster Remake available for free and to continue the project respectfully on the basis of the original.

Axel was also kind enough to provide additional material from the original development period: original C++ code, original graphics, and sounds. That lets the remake not only look like Tank Blaster, but stay much closer to its actual history.

According to Axel's recollection, the sounds came from a public-domain database from the 1990s or 2000s; he created some sounds himself. He said the two music tracks definitely came from a public-domain database.

Retro lookback

A look back at Tank Blaster's old web home

Straight from the shareware era: table layouts, GIF buttons, Windows 9x, and exactly the right amount of yellow on black. A small trip back to where Tank Blaster once lived online.
